Matilde Poggi is the visionary behind Le Fraghe, one of the most respected estates in Bardolino. Located in Cavaion Veronese, just east of Lake Garda and south of Monte Baldo, Le Fraghe sits in the heart of this historic DOC in northern Italy. The Poggi family has owned the property and its 15th-century stone farmhouse since 1880, but it was Matilde who transformed it into a modern estate winery with her first vintage in 1984.

Today, Matilde farms 28 hectares of estate vineyards, focusing primarily on Corvina along with Rondinella and a small amount of Garganega. She has championed a fresh, transparent style of winemaking that highlights the unique terroir of Bardolino without the influence of excessive oak or alcohol. Her wines are bright, food-friendly, and highly expressive — refined yet easy to drink.

Le Fraghe has been certified organic in the vineyards since 2009 and in the cellar since 2012. Fermentations are conducted with native yeasts, using a pied de cuve prepared from each vineyard to ensure purity and consistency. Long, cool fermentations preserve aromatics and enhance complexity. Minimal intervention is the rule, and the result is a range of wines that are honest, vibrant, and full of character.

In addition to her work in the vineyard and cellar, Matilde is a leader in Italy’s independent grower movement. In 2013, she was elected President of the Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti (FIVI), a role that reflects her commitment to preserving grower integrity and regional identity. With three daughters, she is also planning for the future, with hopes that Le Fraghe will remain a family-run estate for generations to come.
