Discover the captivating legacy of raicilla, a venerable category of agave spirits with a storied 400-year heritage in the heart of Jalisco. Originating in the 1780s when mezcal artisans cleverly adopted the name raicilla to circumvent an onerous mezcal tax imposed by the Spanish crown, this clandestine innovation proved triumphant, preserving an artisanal tradition still cherished today. Yet, raicilla’s allure remains shrouded in mystery, largely eclipsed by the meteoric rise of Tequila, Jalisco’s iconic agave elixir and the world’s most famous mezcal.

Jalisco, renowned as an agave wonderland second only to Oaxaca, offers an unparalleled diversity of agave species growing within its expansive terroir. Here, amidst a confluence of cultures and the largest array of pre-industrial still types, an incredible spectrum—shall we say symphony—of flavors unfolds. Embrace the finest in raicilla and embark on a journey of unparalleled taste and tradition with La Venenosa.

At the helm of La Venenosa is Esteban Morales Garibi, a trailblazing advocate who traversed Jalisco’s rugged terrain in pursuit of the region’s finest producers. He launched La Venenosa in 2014 as the first raicilla brand to enter the US market legally. La Venenosa’s collection consists of five distinctive raicilla expressions that are meticulously crafted by diverse mezcaleros employing varied techniques and drawing from distinct agave species across Jalisco. This collection is an ode to Jalisco’s vivacious spirit and a celebration of its people.

As raicilla gains newfound prominence on the global stage, a battle for authenticity ensues, prompting La Venenosa to champion its heritage under the banner of Espiritu de Jalisco on its labels. For those traditionalists embracing the designated origin (D.O.), La Venenosa and Cream extend warm regards, recognizing the shared passion for preserving Jalisco’s agave legacy.
